It is categorized as Premium in United States, it is 20% more expensive than other berries and its consumption is increasing. Agrícola Fragaria detected the opportunity and developed this crop in Chile which is reaching 120 hectares.
Discretely arrived in Chile, almost nobody noticing, but this year is reaching 120 hectares and it is expected to be the future fruit. Sweet flavour, high antioxidant contents and wide market in USA are their credentials.
With the new millennium everything started, three shareholders from Agrícola Fragaria realized that marionberry could become a true gold mine that they were ready to exploit.
“We grow different kinds of berries and we exported blackberries, but Mexico also started to export them therefore they put us out of the business. We started searching for new alternatives and we realized that Marionberry was the best option since USA was the main market for this type of berry as it was consumed over 50 years in this country and it is a very coveted product” stated Jaime Bravo, one of the three owners, along with Francisco Munita and Nestor Braithwaite.
