Rafael Godoy: Chilean develops new preserver for fresh berries

A new preserver for post-harvest fresh strawberries and raspberries was created by the Chilean Rafael Godoy. In particular form and with its own resources, after several years of research and testing managed to prolong the service life or shell life of fresh berries, particularly strawberries and raspberries, up to 14 days or more.

Thus it gives a loose period of marketing of fresh berries that are exported by air, can be achieved very distant markets which are now very risky for these fruits of rapid and high perecibility and in some cases can be exported by sea or land, dramatically lowering the cost of freight.
On the other hand when using this new preserver, it lowers the risk of rejection by the presence of insects in quarantine fresh berries and reduce losses from normal fruit, according to studies conducted in the USA can exceed 40% of the harvest so that level global mean hundreds of millions of dollars.
This new preserver is presented in a sachet, like a tea bag, inside which there is a wet gel containing the active ingredients, which inhibit the development of pathogens that degrade the fruit. At the time of harvest in the countryside, or after selecting fruit in the packing, is placed at the bottom of clamshell or deposit, described the sachet, then placed a grid of separation and fruit on top, to finally wrap the clamshell or deposit with film commonly used. So the clamshell or deposits with fruit and sachets involved in film, are kept cold until their consumption being the only case in which ensures protection from the field to the final purchaser.
Thus, inside the clamshell or deposit, the fruit itself is a modified atmosphere rich in CO2 more active ingredients of the gel, which impede the development of pathogens such as Botrytis and Rhizopus among others, while maintaining optimum humidity, that prevents dehydration of fresh fruit.
It is important to emphasize that the fruit does not have direct contact with the sachet and that none of the active ingredients of the gel is wet or has questioned restriction in any country in the world.
This new and patented preserver, was validated in tests conducted at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Playa Ancha, at the Faculty of Agronomy of the University of Chile and in the INIA La Platina, in addition to demonstrations held in Serbia in the business Eurochile Foundation and demonstrative small consignments to Canada, USA and England and even a shipment of fresh raspberries by sea to Miami.
